Joint Commission releases 2019 National Patient Safety Goals
The 2019 National Patient Safety Goals (NPSGs) are now available on The Joint Commission’s website. You can download the entire chapter from the accreditation standards manual or easy-to-read versions.

Included in this year’s NPSGs is a new element of performance (EP) for NPSG.01.01.01, EP 3. It is designed to improve the naming convention of newborns after delivery to prevent medical errors due to conventional, nondistinct naming methods, such as:
  • Wrong tests

  • Wrong procedures

  • Administering the wrong breastmilk to an infant
The new requirement will take effect Jan. 1, 2019, for hospitals and critical access hospitals. View the NPSGs:
